The Indian School of Mines was established on 9th December 1926, by Lord Irwin, the then Viceroy of India with disciplines of Mining and Applied Geology. In 1967 it was granted the status of a deemed university. Situated in the heart of the country's prime coking coal belt, the campus spreads over an area of 393 acres. The fully residential campus with all the facilities of a world class academic institute currently has 17 different Departments and over 200 faculty, and over 5000 students.
The institute currently offers programmes which includes B. Tech., M. Tech., M. Sc. Tech., and MBA. In addition the School also offers M. Phil. and full time as well as part time Ph. D. programmes in the field of engineering, Sciences, Management and Humanities and Social Sciences. ISM also awards D.Sc. as the highest degree of academic achievement. The admission to the four year and the five year graduate courses are through the prestigious IIT-JEE examination.
